Who qualifies as an American?
The term "American" can have different meanings depending on the context:
1. Geographic Context
In a broad sense, "American" refers to anyone from the continents of North America or South America. However, this usage is less common outside of academic or geographic discussions.

2. Political/National Context
More commonly, "American" refers to someone who is a citizen or national of the United States of America (USA). This includes:
- Natural-born citizens: People born on U.S. soil, in U.S. territories, or to U.S. citizen parents.
- Naturalized citizens: People who were born outside the U.S. but later acquired citizenship through the naturalization process.
- Dual citizens: Individuals who hold citizenship in both the U.S. and another country.
3. Cultural Context
"American" may also describe individuals who identify with U.S. culture, values, or lifestyle, even if they are not citizens (e.g., long-term residents or expatriates).
It’s worth noting that in the Americas (especially Latin America), people from other countries in the region sometimes push back against the exclusive use of "American" for U.S. citizens, as it implies that the USA monopolizes the term when it technically applies to all of the Americas.
